What is it?

The Kamehameha Highway Improvements Project is a program by the Hawaii Department of Transportation (HDOT), the City and County of Honolulu's Department of Transportation Services (DTS), and elected officials from the area to develop and implement for Kamehameha Highway safety, appearance, and traffic flow improvements from Waihona Street (Sam's Club near Pearl City) to Center Drive (Hickam Air Force Base).

Hardware and software improvements to traffic signal coordination and timing throughout the corridor to reduce congestion during peak travel hours.

Improvements to medians and intersections to increase safety for all travelers.

Aesthetic Views

Improvements to landscaping to open scenic views and promote visual continuity.

Cultural/Historic Context

Improvements to roadway treatments to reflect the cultural values of the community and agricultural history of the area.

Presentations on the progress of Kamehameha Improvements Project are made at Aiea, Pearl City, & Aliamanu/Salt Lake Neighborhood Board Meetings.

How will improvements benefit pedestrians?

Although walking is a critical means of travel for many in the corridor, pedestrians are faced with various obstacles on a daily basis. The Kamehameha Highway Improvements Project will incorporate several elements to create a better experience for pedestrians and a more walkable community.
