Existing Challenges

What are the existing challenges?

The challenges facing this corridor have been identified through past community planning; surveys of existing traffic, safety, and physical conditions; and ongoing community outreach.

Regional Connection

In addition to serving local destinations, the corridor is a gateway to Waipahu and Ewa.

Dense & Diverse Lands

Dense land uses increase local traffic, and the diversity of land use prohibits a visual cohesion through the area.

Various Travel Markets

Kamehameha Highway serves pedestrians, transit riders, cyclists, cars and trucks. It provides movement for local, commercial, commuter, tourist, military, special event, recreational, and other travel purposes.

Vehicular Traffic

Major intersections are at or approaching capacity and bottleneck locations in the corridor force 4 lanes to merge to 3, causing heavy congestion.

Aesthetic Views

Overhead utilities block scenic views, and gaps in landscaping prevent a sense of place and visual connectedness.

Cultural/Historic Context

Current roadway treatments do not reflect the cultural values of the community or agricultural history of the area.
