Safety Improvements
How will improvements benefit pedestrians?
Although walking is a critical means of travel for many in the corridor, pedestrians are faced with various obstacles on a daily basis. The Kamehameha Highway Improvements Project will incorporate the following elements to create a better experience for pedestrians and a more walkable community.
Data Collection
Traffic, safety and physical condition data have been collected throughout the corridor. |

Pedestrian Countdown SignalsPedestrian Countdown Signals will be installed at each intersection from Acacia Road (Home Depot) to Center Drive (Hickam Air Force Base). |
Pedestrian Signal Timing
Ensure pedestrians adequate time to cross the streets. |

Median Fencing
A chain link fence will be constructed in certain median locations along Kamehameha Highway to restrict illegal mid-block pedestrian crossings. This will encourage pedestrians to cross at marked cross walks. Median Fencing Motifs provides details on design motifs to appear on the median fencing. |
Pearl Harbor Historic Sites Gateway
Enhancing the landscaping treatments and pedestrian access will improve the overall experience for the visitor. |

Transit Interface
In addition to landscape enhancements, safety features such as pedestrian barriers, sidewalk rehabilitation, sidewalk widening, and American Disabilities Act (ADA) upgrades are proposed to be integrated into the design of the future light rail transit system. |
