Where will traffic improvements take place?
To better accommodate traffic flow through the area, many of the traffic improvements projects will occur throughout the corridor.
Intersection Signal Improvements: Hekaha and Kaahumanu Streets
- The purpose of this project is to improve traffic flow at the intersections of Kamehameha Highway with Hekaha Street, and Kaahumanu Street.
- Traffic conditions at the Hekaha intersection had included long lines of cars on side streets during weekend peak hours. A new signal timing plan was implemented in December 2006.
- The Kaahumanu intersection also has long lines of cars on the side streets on weekends. In addition, makai-bound cars turning left sometimes do not yield to mauka-bound traffic leaving Blaisdell Park.
- Kaahumanu Street will be split phased so the mauka and makai movements will be separated. Signal Changes will be implemented January 2009.
Corridor Signal Optimization
- The purpose of this project is to optimize traffic signal timing on Kamehameha Highway from Waihona Street to Center Drive.
- The project will investigate updating the traffic signal patterns. One focus will be to ensure that pedestrians have adequate time to cross the street.
- Work will start between Honomanu Street and Acacia Road, and then follow between Center Drive and Salt Lake Boulevard.
Monitoring and Signal Operation Improvements
This project will include the following elements:
- Pedestrian countdown signals will be installed at each intersection from Acacia Road (Home Depot) to Center Drive (Hickam Air Force Base).
- Underground fiber optics will establish a communications link between all intersections.
- Traffic monitoring cameras will be installed at seven strategic locations, providing full coverage of the entire corridor. This will enable the Traffic Management Center on Ward Avenue to observe traffic conditions in the corridor and make adjustments when appropriate.
- Five intersections will be modernized. Eight more are awaiting additional funding.
